The critical role of colorectal cancer screening

How a simple test saved a life

A recent video from the Rewriting Cancer series, presented by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, focuses on the importance of early, regular screening for colorectal cancer with OC-Auto FIT®. Rewriting Cancer is a series of films that have been produced across five continents, depicting the global challenge of transforming cancer diagnosis and treatment. The critical importance of screening for CRC with OC-Auto FIT was determined by the BBC to be a vital story in the interest of public health.

This article explores the importance of annual CRC screening for patients aged 45 or older,1-3 focusing particularly on the role of the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) in effective, early detection.

The Life-Saving Power of Early Detection: Gladys’ Story

After a routine yearly checkup, Gladys used the at-home OC-Auto FIT screening test, which came back positive for blood in her stool. This result prompted a colonoscopy that ultimately revealed colon cancer – the same type of cancer her late husband had suffered from.

Thanks to the early detection enabled by OC-Auto FIT, the potentially deadly mass in her rectum was found in its early stages and could be completely removed.

“She’s completely cured of colon cancer at this time […] The [OC-Auto] FIT test saved her life.”

Gladys’ story is a powerful testament to the importance of annual screening. Without OC-Auto FIT, her cancer might have gone unnoticed until it was too late. Both she and her physician, Dr Patel, are passionate advocates for regular screening and early detection, and wanted to tell their story to the public.

The Growing Prevalence of CRC

Gladys’ experience underscores why it’s essential to encourage screening among patients 45 years of age or older, as recommended by leading expert guidelines.1-3 Patients under 50 should be particularly aware of the dangers of CRC - in fact, CRC is the leading cause of cancer death in men under 50 and the second leading cause in women under 50.4

Unlike many other cancers, CRC grows slowly and has precursor lesions, Dr Aasma Shaukat, Professor of Medicine at New York Harbor VA Healthcare System explains.

“That truly gives us a target to not only detect cancer early but prevent it altogether by detecting and removing these precursor lesions,” Shaukat says.

Despite these benefits, screening rates remain low, particularly among patients under the age of 50.5

Efforts are ongoing to increase these rates to 80% or higher6 by promoting accessible tests like OC-Auto FIT. OC-Auto FIT, which can be done at home, aims to increase screening rates by making screening more accessible and less daunting, ultimately enhancing public health.

“Colon cancer is a silent disease. You don’t have to have any symptomatology at all to have a large mass in your colon,” says Patel.

And while colonoscopy remains the most well-known CRC screening method, many patients find its invasive and time-consuming process intimidating.

“Part of the hesitation to have a colonoscopy is that it is a time-consuming process. It involves two days for patients. Many times, patients are embarrassed. And then there’s also fears of the examination,” Patel explained.

“A great technique to try to at least identify these individuals is a FIT”

-Dr Vinay Patel, Gladys’ Gastroenterologist

Partnering with Physicians for Better Colon Cancer Outcomes

At Polymedco, we see ourselves as partners with healthcare providers in the fight against CRC. We encourage physicians to incorporate annual OC-Auto FIT screening into their standard practice and to educate their patients on its importance. Here are some strategies that can help:

Patient Education

Regularly discuss the benefits of colon cancer screening with your patients, particularly those at higher risk due to age or family history. Educating patients about the ease and accuracy of the OC-Auto FIT can help alleviate any concerns they may have.

Streamline the Process

Offer the OC-Auto FIT kit directly to your patients during routine visits. By making the test easily accessible, you can increase the likelihood of patients completing their annual screenings.

“A FIT test lends itself very nicely to programmatic screening, because the test can be done easily in the comfort of patient’s home and result in higher screening rates.”

Monitor Compliance

Implement a tracking system to ensure that patients complete their annual OC-Auto FIT tests. Personalized follow-ups can significantly improve adherence rates, leading to earlier detection and better outcomes.

Collaborate with Specialists

Ensure that positive test results are promptly followed by a referral for colonoscopy. Early intervention is key to successful treatment, and timely referrals are an essential part of the screening process.

Conclusion

Colon cancer may be a silent disease, but the steps we take to detect it don’t have to be. Embracing simple and accessible tests like OC-Auto FIT, as highlighted by Gladys’ story in the UICC’s BBCs’ Rewriting Cancer series, and encouraging regular screenings can lead to early detection and save lives.

As Gladys’ story illustrates, taking proactive health measures can make all the difference. If you haven’t been screened, now is the time to act and ensure you’re protected against colon cancer.

“I really hope people really think about their risk of colorectal cancer. We say the best test is the one that gets done. So, we’re looking for colon cancer screening tests that the patients are willing to complete, are easy, and readily available. And our hope is to boost screening rates to 80% or higher and really make an impact at the population health level.”
