Colorectal Cancer Possible Indications

Colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) or colon cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum. It is the most common gastrointestinal cancer and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Colorectal cancer begins as small tumors in the digestive tract, known as polyps, which can later become cancerous.

Signs and symptoms of CRC

Common signs and symptoms of CRC include:

  • Blood in the stool.
  • Rectal bleeding.
  • Change in bowel habits.
  • Fatigue and weakness.
  • Constipation.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Abdominal pain and cramps.
  • Weight loss.

Ways to detect CRC

Screening is essential to detecting CRC. There are several screening and detection methods used by doctors to screen and detect CRC at an early stage.

Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT): FOBT detects colorectal cancer at an early stage. It detects blood in the stool, which is often a symptom of CRC.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: In this test, the doctor examines the lower half of the sigmoid colon by using a lighted scope to detect and remove any abnormality.

Colonoscopy: During this test, the doctor uses a lighted scope to view the entire colon. If there are any polyps, the doctor detects and removes them during this procedure.

CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy): In this screening, CT scan image technology is used to produce detailed pictures of the inside of the colon and rectum.

Double Contrast Barium Enema (DCBE): This test uses X-ray examination to confirm the diagnosis and locate the tumor. During this procedure, a liquid with barium is inserted through the anus and into the rectum and colon. However, this test does not allow polyps to be removed.
